The Friends of Patton Homestead invite the public to a special community ceremony commemorating the Eightieth Anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (VE Day), to be held on Thursday, May 8, at 6:30 P.M.. at Patton Park (Asbury St & MA-1A, South Hamilton, MA).

This event will honor the sacrifices and achievements of those who served in World War II in Europe, with a special rededication of the Liberty Markers located on Bay Road. These historical markers were gifted to the Town of Hamilton by the people of France in gratitude for the role American forces played in liberating France during World War II. The U.S. Third Army—commanded by Hamilton’s own General George S. Patton, Jr.—played a pivotal role in this campaign, which culminated in the defeat of Nazi Germany in May 1945.

The Liberty Markers in Hamilton are part of the Liberty Road, a historic route that begins in Normandy and is lined with symbolic milestones placed every kilometer along the path taken by the U.S. Third Army after the D-Day landings in 1944. The final milestone, number 1,147, stands in Bastogne, Belgium, marking the journey’s end and the Allied victory in Europe.

“In these times of global uncertainty, it is essential to pause and reflect on Victory in Europe Day,” said Kim Casella, Vice President of Friends of the Patton Homestead. “We honor the bravery and sacrifices of those who fought to bring an end to World War II, with a special tribute to General Patton, a symbol of victory and esteemed historic military resident. His legacy reminds us of the resilience and hope that emerged from such a tumultuous chapter in history.”

“Friends of Patton Homestead (FPH) and local Boy Scouts restored the Liberty Road marker enclosures that were built as part of a Hamilton Eagle Scout project in 2009,” added Leandra DeFeo, President of Friends of the Patton Homestead and organizer of the event. “FPH is honored to be able to ensure this gift continues to protect the Liberty Road markers for years to come.”

In keeping with its mission to preserve history, honor veterans, and engage the community, the Friends of Patton Homestead are leading the restoration of these markers to ensure their legacy continues for future generations.

All are welcome to attend this free public event. Join neighbors, veterans, civic leaders, and history enthusiasts in this powerful remembrance of courage, sacrifice, and international friendship. Questions should be directed to the Friends of the Patton Homestead President
