Citizens Police Academy
The Hamilton Police Department is pleased to announce the commencement of its new, updated Public Safety Academy. The academy will be held on eight consecutive Wednesday evenings from 6:00 PM to 8:00 pm beginning February 25, 2026 and concluding on April 15, 2026.
This new Public Safety Academy is designed to familiarize citizens with the operation of the Hamilton Police Department and how we function with both the Communications Center and the Fire Department. Classes cover various topics such as: Patrol Procedures, Motor Vehicle and OUI Enforcement, Criminal Investigations, Use of Force, a tour of the Essex County House of Correction and various Fire Department demonstrations. Additionally, participants complete a 2 hour police ride along which gives students a firsthand experience as to what police patrol looks like. Courses will be taught by Hamilton Police Officers, Police Supervisors, Hamilton Fire Fighters and Dispatch personnel.
There is no charge to attend, and you must be 18 years or older or aged 16 and 17 with parental permission. The class is limited to 20 students.
